All Time Top 25 Games

  • Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island#83 in All Time Favorite Games#1Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Isl...BenjiNinja's opinion: This was the first game I ever played. It is an agape and trinity of gameplay, music and visuals. The gameplay is so tight, every level introduces something fresh and fun. I have the fondest memories of this game and I can play it endlessly without getting sick of it. The final boss is one of the most epic moments in all of gaming and has the coolest 1980s midi guitar riff. This game will always have a special place in my heart. The artstyle in this game was a huge evolution from Super Mario World, this game had a crayon inspired artstyle in order to capture... a babyish feel about it I guess. The game was going to be 3D rendered but Miyamoto saved the day. The graphics are crisp and the SNES's superFX chip for bosses battles was awesome
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time#1 in All Time Favorite Games#2The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of...BenjiNinja's opinion: This game revolutionised gaming. It has some of the most heart and soul I've ever seen put into a video game. This really set the bar and standard for a great game and it has aged magnificently, every element of game play in this game is still relevant to this day. I love this game's soundtrack, I was going to say Wind Waker is my favourite and maybe melodically it is. But this game really established some of the iconic Zelda music. Gerudo Theme, Saria's song. Music played a really special role in this game that continues to effect the flow of time and come back to us in many original and nostalgic remixes and tunes through out the Zelda universe.
  • Chrono Trigger#17 in All Time Favorite Games#3Chrono TriggerBenjiNinja's opinion: The best RPG game I have ever played. Time Travel, magic, swords, robots, post-apocalyptic futures, dinosaurs! This game had everything. It has inspirational characters and musical scores and 100+ hours of game play you never got tired of! Once again the soundtrack and musical scores, character themes were so beautiful and atmospheric. I had to delete Katamari Forever with much pain to include this in my list!
  • The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess#42 in All Time Favorite Games#4The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Pr...BenjiNinja's opinion: Beautiful. This is my second favourite Zelda game. Twilight Princess may not have had the strongest game play mechanics but it had a really sensational, dark and gripping story that I loved. Midna was also a fantastic character. Every hour I put into this game I felt satisfied.
  • Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge#226 in All Time Favorite Games#5Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Reven...BenjiNinja's opinion: This along with Monkey Island 1 was one of the first PC games I ever played. It's absolutely beautiful pixel artwork mixed with all the zany incredibly scripted humour of any Lucasarts Adventure Game. I spent years playing this game finally finishing it when I was old enough to understand logic puzzles. It's a really fun tale that made me want to be a mighty pirate.
  • The Curse of Monkey Island#259 in All Time Favorite Games#6The Curse of Monkey IslandBenjiNinja's opinion: This game furthered the Monkey Island franchise with Disney-esque graphics and voice acting. The humour was brilliant, the story was so much fun and the the presentation phenomenal. I thought about picked Monkey Island 2 as one of my favourite art-styles because of all the gorgeous pixel art however I thought about this game and decided the saturday morning cartoon style was really nice! It's a little compressed for back in the CD ROM games but still holds up. Imagine if they redid something like this in super HD, it would look amazing! I really liked the cartoony artstyle that blended a whole bunch of animations and sprites to tell the story of Guybrush Threepwood better than I could have imagined.
  • Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga#299 in All Time Favorite Games#7Mario & Luigi: Superstar SagaBenjiNinja's opinion: This game was SO much fun. My friend and I figured out how to make it two-player by plugging it into the GBA attachment for the Gamecube. This game took the Mario brothers in a really fresh direction, really great story and gameplay, RPG battles were never boring with all the neat combo moves you could do.
  • The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker#23 in All Time Favorite Games#8The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Wa...BenjiNinja's opinion: Wind Waker. The cel shaded graphics are beautiful. The gameplay is beautiful. The story introduced some of the strongest characterisation of Zelda characters including giving Ganondorf a human side. Very high on my list but penalised due to breaking up of the Zelda formula with sailing however that does not hinder how much fun sailing was. Furthering my love for Wind Waker, I really love the orchestrated soundtrack in this game capturing exploration, Dragon Roost Island and some of the climatic boss battles. As well as the sword clang flourishes.
  • Paper Mario#138 in All Time Favorite Games#9Paper MarioBenjiNinja's opinion: Incredibly fresh. At the time I was in awe of this game because of how indepth Mario characters became and how much of the mushroom kingdom you got to explore. Despite every character being 2D it really felt like a 3D world I wanted to explore for hours.
  • Banjo-Tooie#163 in All Time Favorite Games#10Banjo-TooieBenjiNinja's opinion: The greatest 3D platformer ever. Rare set a sensational standard and this game is how we should remember the legacy. A perfect sequal allowing you to keep all your abilities from the last game but introduced a whole STACK of story, characters and gameplay mechanics. It was a true masterwork and hours of fun.
  • Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence#181 in All Time Favorite Games#11Metal Gear Solid 3: SubsistenceBenjiNinja's opinion: The ending of this game made it my favourite of the entire metal gear series. Everything was SO epic. Crawling through the jungle was also lots of fun and there were some really iconic moments and boss battle gameplay mechanics that really set this game apart.
  • Kingdom Hearts II#53 in All Time Favorite Games#12Kingdom Hearts IIBenjiNinja's opinion: This was another true sequel. Improving on everything KH1 achieved. Disney and Final Fantasy, this game was my entire childhood interacting in one amazing, heart filled adventure. Sora will always be a special protagonist to me capturing child like wonder and determination to do the right hting.
  • Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch#430 in All Time Favorite Games#13Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White W...BenjiNinja's opinion: This game is new but truly beautiful. Everything is Ghibli. The art, music, visuals, story, characters. This is one of the freshest RPG experiences I've had in years. It's beautiful and fun and solid. THIS GAME WAS MADE BY STUDIO GHIBLI SO THE ART STYLE IS GORGEOUS! Crisp Anime Cutscenes, cel-shaded in universe graphics. Lush, lush, luscious backgrounds you want to spend days exploring. Everywhere you look in this game is an art treat you just want to look at.
  • Super Mario World#13 in All Time Favorite Games#14Super Mario WorldBenjiNinja's opinion: This game is an instant classic. Tight controls, interesting level design and new enemies and Yoshi introduced to Mario. I spent many hours playing this with friends as a child.
  • Donkey Kong 64#186 in All Time Favorite Games#15Donkey Kong 64BenjiNinja's opinion: COLLECTABLES, COLLECTABLES, BANANAS AND COLLECTABLES. Who said collectathons aren't fun? I had so much collecting every single item in this game. With really inventive character swap gameplay and some dark humour, this game was a classic of Rare's and lots of fun.
  • Mass Effect 2#4 in All Time Favorite Games#16Mass Effect 2BenjiNinja's opinion: This game has been tainted a little for me by Mass Effect 3 but when it first came out as a stand alone game I loved it. I love character interaction and the story and the darker route as you try and unlock what the hell is happening in the galaxy. A lot of people won't agree with me and I wish the RPG elements weren't culled so badly but I loved the customisable armour and stream-lined cover gameplay. This game was so intense and really had you bond to your characters. But only if you play as Fem Shep because Jennifer Hale's voice acting was outstanding!
  • Batman: Arkham City#55 in All Time Favorite Games#17Batman: Arkham CityBenjiNinja's opinion: This game did amazing things with the Batman Mythos. Hardly compromising this game gave you the full Batman experience tying in way more villains and characters and story twists then the gamer deserved. It was SO much fun.
  • Final Fantasy VII#7 in All Time Favorite Games#18Final Fantasy VIIBenjiNinja's opinion: Graphically this game has aged terribly. But storywise this game is still great and did some really cutting edge things like killing off a protagonist and love interest. I really dig the story and fun in this final fantasy game and the characters weren't bad either.
  • Super Paper Mario#434 in All Time Favorite Games#19Super Paper MarioBenjiNinja's opinion: This broke the complete RPG formula of the Paper Mario franchise which some hated but in its place it created this really unique RPG/nostalgic side-scrolling adventure. The ability to flip between 2D/3D planes plus the incredible adventure to inter-dimensional world with some genius level designs lead for a really fantastic Mario adventure. Additionally beneath the rainbows and otaku humour this game had an incredibly dark and disturbing meta-story. In terms of game design, this was some of Nintendo and Intelligent Systems finest work
  • Final Fantasy X#26 in All Time Favorite Games#20Final Fantasy XBenjiNinja's opinion: This game is sad. This game is also beautiful. Random encounters are repetitive and it hasn't aged well but the graphics were cutting edge at the time. The story and characters were something really profound and immersive as I played it during my formulative years. Shamefully I wanted to be a hero like Tidus for the longest period of time.
  • Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles#1077 in All Time Favorite Games#21Final Fantasy Crystal ChroniclesBenjiNinja's opinion: This game had the most amazing and beautiful soundtrack ever! It was a full Celtic orchestra. This game captured my soul and I wanted to thrust myself into Crystal Chronicle's world and adventure forever. Multiplayer while nearly impossible to achieve was one of the most fun experiences I've ever had. Re-editing this, I want to emphasize this game's soundtrack. If you have never heard it go download it or listen to it on youtube. It's sensational and captures your spirit of adventure. It's unlike anything I've ever heard in a game.
  • The Last of Us#62 in All Time Favorite Games#22The Last of Us
  • Tales of Symphonia#131 in All Time Favorite Games#23Tales of SymphoniaBenjiNinja's opinion: Me, my friend, his brother and my brother followed each other around for two weeks and played through this whole game non-stop. The story is chaotic and the voice acting is a little... well... you know. HOWEVER the story is still amazing and playing that long with the same group of people, it was one of the greatest gameplay experiences I've ever had.
  • Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire#136 in All Time Favorite Games#24Pokemon Ruby and SapphireBenjiNinja's opinion: I had to pick only one pokemon game because in truth I've sunk hours into all of them. I picked ruby/sapphire. I feel like they introduced the best mechanics for the franchise, created a beautifully coloured world on the GBA's palette and introduced my favourite pokemon Mudkip. I had a lot of fun exploring Hoenn
  • The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages#505 in All Time Favorite Games#25The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of A...BenjiNinja's opinion: SPENT SO MANY HOURS finishing this and Oracle. A simple yet super profound zelda experience with an amazing story and LOTS to explore and do.

3D Dot Game HeroesSilicon Studio (2009)

3D Dot Game Heroes

Review written Friday, March 8th, 2013 at 11:38 am.

This game emulates an 8-bit Zelda game completely but without the Zelda charm. However what it does have is an incredibly unique visual style. The game emulates 8-bit sprites but using 3D cubes instead. The result is a delicious world that looks almost like everything is assembled by real lego blocks. It almost is able to jump the uncanny valley and I had to do some double takes a few times to make sure this was still a game. The best part about the game is you get to design your own protagonist's spirite/3D model. That was a lot of fun and I wish the game had let you do that for every enemy and character in the game. Lego should seriously invest in a block inspired RPG or 8-bitesque game.

The Walking DeadTelltale Games (2012)

The Walking Dead

Review written Friday, March 8th, 2013 at 11:37 am.

Telltale games had exceedingly unappealing artstyles trying to keep graphics low in order to benefit the distribution of episodic games. Until the Walking Dead Game. They used all sorts of filters and character designs to simulate the Walking Dead comicbook and did so with great success. You can still tell things are simple 3D however it doesn't stop characters from looking visually appealing. There are all sorts of sketchy outlines, and waterstain shading. The game is incredibly dark, powerfully story driven allowing you to make some impossibly hard morale decisions but some how... these cartoon graphics work so well for a zombie game. Maybe cause you don't expect comicbook characters to bleed so much blood!

The NeverhoodThe Neverhood (1996)

The Neverhood

Review written Friday, March 8th, 2013 at 11:33 am.

I haven't actually got around to playing this game yet, but I've owned the soundtrack and watched many gameplay videos. This game had super unique gameplay style that's been surprising only copied by very few other games. The game's entire visuals are pre-rendered pictures of claymation constructs with cutscenes told through actual claymation. It made for a very appealing and surreal game. The soundtrack suits the game perfectly being a cappella adding to the game's mysterious and sometimes creepy landscape. I wish more video games would attempt claymation as an artstyle or even investing in 3D technology to make it look like clay. Maybe something for the new generation.

Paper Mario: Sticker StarIntelligent Systems (2012)

Paper Mario: Sticker Star

Review written Friday, March 8th, 2013 at 11:31 am.

This is my least favourite Paper Mario game because of how they ruined and removed all the great and zany story papermario was famous for. However I cannot fault it on it's brilliant gameplay mechanics and visuals. The graphics in this game are entirely made out of papercraft and on the 3DS the visuals and depths of 3D layers made this game look gorgeous! This paper mario game employs paper physics more then any other leading to some hilarious gameplay. The focus is on using stickers as attacks which is really fun. One of the neatest touch in graphics is when you pick up a shiny holographic sticker, moving the 3DS's gyroscope around will change the shine and reflection on the stickers just like real life. It was a neat feature!

Rayman OriginsUbisoft Montpellier (2011)

Rayman Origins

Review written Friday, March 8th, 2013 at 11:28 am.

After Rayman: Raving Rabbids almost destroyed the Rayman franchise with their never ending party game sequels, I though we would never see another good Rayman game. Then this gem came out of nowhere! The visuals are all digitally drawn and are so crisp the camera is able to zoom in and it makes the game look better. The levels are illustrated SO nicely and the engine this game is designed in is able to bend character sillouettes to get some of the smoothest and funniest animations I've ever seen in a videogame. The game play is tight, fun, great multiplayer, challenging whilst doing away with pointless lives. This was a great recovery for the Rayman franchise and beautiful art.

PsychonautsDouble Fine Productions (2005)

Review written Friday, March 8th, 2013 at 11:14 am.

I really want them to make a Psychonauts 2 because this games was one of the most delightful game experiences ever. It's actual gameplay is maybe a wee bit dated now but the story, the characters and the humour are some of Tim Schafer's finest. This game is famous for its really quirky and vibrant colour scheme and character designs. Everything is stylised in a really unique cartoony way that looks like it was ripped straight from a Nickelodeon cartoon and I've never seen another video game try and emulate this style. It added to the trippy psycho-crazy levels you played as you entered people's minds. In fact the game's artstyle changed depending on the person's mind. Also who IS the milkman?

Kirby's Dream Land 3HAL Laboratory (1997)

Kirby's Dream Land 3

Review written Friday, March 8th, 2013 at 11:11 am.

Nearly every Kirby games is my favourite but this one especially. It evoked a really unique art style trying to simulate crayon drawings. It took use of the SNES's special "pseudo high-resolution" mode that allowed two adjacent pixels to blend together allowing them to emulate cute crayon doodles. It's maybe not the most fun kirby game (they are all fun!) but it's got great co-op play and the sprites and all so pretty and lovely and cute! For the time and the era, it was hard to find another SNES game that looked as great as this!

Sonic GenerationsSonic Team (2011)

Sonic Generations

Review written Tuesday, March 5th, 2013 at 01:06 pm.

I decided to cheat and put Sonic Generations as one of my favourite soundtracks. In reality despite the wavering gameplay, the Sonic franchise has had some AMAZING soundtracks. (Escape from the City, Team Chaotix theme, Sonic Boom, Sonic Heroes theme etc) However this game had a compilation of amazing sonic songs as unlockables in the game as well as many remixes and that's why this soundtrack is my favourite.

Sonic HeroesSonic Team USA (2003)

Sonic Heroes

Review written Tuesday, March 5th, 2013 at 01:05 pm.

Not my favourite Sonic Game but GOSH DARN DANG this soundtrack. The Sonic series despite its game-play flaws always has good soundtracks. This one in particular because of the Sonic Heroes theme but also the Team Chaotix theme: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9E66ywToGU

Review written Tuesday, March 5th, 2013 at 01:04 pm.

So many songs I wanted to put on my list but I picked this game as one of my favourite soundtracks. I love all the Donkey Kong Country games for their challenging and tight platforming, cutting edge graphics and multiplayer. However in particular I love the soundtracks for their cool and atmospheric environments they create. I picked Donkey Kong: Country 3 as it's my favourite of the series but also because it broke away from hip jungle beats or pirate sea shanties to present something really profound and vibrant. The music in this game is really serene and mysterious as you explore a more European inspired landscape rather than a jungle and there was just something magical about this game.
