This game is fun from a tactic standpoint, but it has many flaws. Gameplay can be glitchy and often unfair. People not used to strategy games might find even easy mode very difficult until the alien base is completed. After that, the difficulty curve becomes more of a gentle plateau.

XCOM Enemy Unknown is the revival of a seemingly dead genre, but it pulls it off so well that we're pretty damn sure that the zombie is better than the original dead guy. It will have you hooked from beginning to end, so pick it up. Also: This game is for people who crave a hardcore challenge, you think twice and you're done. Game over here is not like game over in a different game, you lose, and that's it. Also, also: you should pick it up because it's a revival of a genre, and if you want others to follow in it's wake you should probably help out.

This game brought the original successful into the current generation.

X-com resurrected my faith in a gaming industry pullulating with a lack of originality. That might sound odd about a game that is technically a remake, but in truth, this game is great in its own right. As the commander of a secret quasi-govt. outfit created by a desperate group of superpowers to repulse the alien threat, you'll first pick a base location for your HQ. From there, it's a constant (but fun) struggle to juggle the strategic responsibilities of directing upgrades, research, and choosing where/when to respond to threats with your limited resources. The tactical side to the game is where the action takes place, as your crews of soldiers fight through a variety of environments around the world to accomplish objectives. Do get.

I really like good turn based strategy games. This is why I was baffled by how how much this rather flat game got praised. The maps are tiny, your field of vision is tiny, both your soldiers and the enemies are bland, the difficulty seems to come more from bullshitty "surprise, a guy popped out of the shadows that were 10 feet away" way than from the mechanics and AI like a Fire Emblem game, there are only 4 available camera angles, and it's pretty glitchy and unpolished. The generic art, horrible, boring writing, and pointless cutscenes don't help, either. It's baffling how backwards and clunky it is after Valkyria Chronicles illustrated how much you could do with a turn based strategy game.

Bringing the tactical strategy games of yesterday into today. XCom is easily one of this years best games. Also one of the most punishing

XCOM is brilliant! I never played the original XCOM but this is everything that i look for in a turn based strategy game, it's fun, it's engrossing, and has a good multiplayer. Sadly it does have it's buggy moments which can sometimes detract from the overall experience, but they can never fully take away from this masterpiece.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown Review written Sunday, December 2nd, 2012 at 11:42 pm.

XCOM is a series long due for a revival, but it's a kind of game where the original was so well regarded the odds of a sequel living up to the reputation is slim. XCOM: Enemy Unknown is about as good of an effort you can expect. It is streamlined quite a bit compared to the micro management of the original, some of which feels natural while a few things (like weapon variety) feel a bit to limited for a tactics game that emphasizes evolving your tech. That said this game has excellent combat that retains those tense moments of "oh please hit." Fine balancing will have you coming back to play one more game, very addicting in the best ways. Hopefully Firaxis can make more XCOMs, as this is a great game in it's own right.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown Review written Sunday, November 18th, 2012 at 12:37 pm.

"XCOM: Enemy Unknown" is a largely fun and faithful remake that gently renovates the 90ies-era gameplay where necessary. I highly recommend it to everyone craving for turn-based strategy/tactics! Having said that, there are a number of problems "XCOM" suffers from: Line-of-sight and cover mechanics - fundamental gameplay elements! - are seriously flawed. Instead of scouring the scenery, enemies seem to either randomly spawn or wait passively until soldiers approach. Control of your squad in multi-level areas is somewhat broken. The story, although well-meant, feels more like an afterthought. And I missed the dark and subtle humour of the original game. Even so, I sincerely hope this won't be the last we have seen of "XCOM" !
