It's the closest video games have actually come to talking about the horrors of World War II and concentration camps. If that sounds like your kind of game, get it now. If you're put off by the anime haircut people, get over it and experience possibly the best tactical RPG ever made. (Maybe the later ones are better, but my PSP is broken and I don't speak Japanese)

Who would have thought a game with cell-shaded graphics will be the game which would tackle the most serious themes of war in the most mature way? Pros: Beautiful art style that makes the game look like a watercolor painting come to life, great story that makes you understand the motives that drive both the protagonists and antagonists, tackles serious themes well, endearing characters, superb music that hits all the right notes, great voice acting, unique gameplay, imaginative menu Cons: AI is kinda dumb, gameplay is a bit on the simple side

This is the real gem of my list. Of all the games I own, this is the one I might be most "proud" of. Until Catherine, this was the only "anime-art-styled" game to ever get that right. It's also one of the most original games I've ever played in terms of gameplay. I'd kill to have sequels of this game on the PS3.

One of the most original takes on the strategy RPG genre I've ever seen. Every aspect of the gameplay, from how death is handled (there is permadeath, but only if you fail to to rescue one of your downed soldiers in a few turns) to how experience works (it's based on overall battle performance and assigned by you to each class, so you don't need to worry about getting kills for your weaker guys or ending a battle before you kill all the enemy grunts) to 3rd person shooter style movement and combat was clearly very carefully though out, and it all works together perfectly. The only real complaint I have is that while the overall story isn't bad, the writing varies from mediocre to cringe-inducing.

It's tough to classify Valkyria Chronicles. It's mix of strategy, tactics, and JRPG story-telling devices just makes for one hell of a game. I was and still am very saddened that the developers are moving all of its sequels to the PSP. I understand it didn't sell very well and it's cheaper to do what they're doing now. However, the charm behind this game was definitely its gorgeous visuals. And that really does not translate very well on to that tiny little screen. Anyway, if you own a PS3 and haven't at least tried this one out you're really missing out on something pretty awesome.

The last gasp of console releases for Sega's best internal development team, Sega Wow. Valkyria Chronicles is a turn-based strategy rpg. What seperates VC apart from other TBS rpgs is the presentation. Characters are selected from an overworld map, but when character movement occurs and character action is taken it's done so from a 3rd person shooter perspective. In addition to the perspective twist, the art consists of beautiful, hand drawn animation that's akin to cell shading. Combine that with a soundtrack from one of the industry's best composers Hitoshi Sakimoto and it all adds up to a unique, wonderful experience.

Just the best RPG you will ever get that has the heart of a good anime series, you really want to see this game till the end, especially the anime fans of heart, and mostly because of how well is the main story is, lovable and well developed characters, and of course, the breath taking action RPG you get from it, every fight keeps you on your toes; It's just great, what else there is to say...

I was simply addicted to this game from the day i picked this up to the day i beat extra hard mode and the story a few times over. Granted the story is nothing new and set in EW2 (Europa War 2 or just simply World War 2..) but when the story isn't over anime influenced (With love, friendship, and having a lady give birth in your tank?) it can provide a good experience. The meat of the game hands down is the mesh of tactical RPG with 3rd person action. A basic but extremely helpful class system providing strength and weaknesses with some of the very powerful classes being engineers and Scouts if used with the correct Command. All that and more with a great appearance of Aika, Vyse, and Fina. What could be better?
