When you think about it, this game has a very deep sense of strategy. It might in fact be the progenitor of that systematic, thinking-man gaming approach(it's nearly as old as D&D). Think of all the moments when you were trying to decide which piece of equipment you were gonna use in your MMORPG or on what spell were you going to spend your meager ammount of mana left, or your tower defense and Dota 2 matches. As silly as it sounds, this was the equivalent of such deep strategic titles back in the day. And its silly and arbitrary subject matter and backstory is also partially responsible for the fact the game is so fondly remembered today. Name your companions after your friends and caulk dat shit tight, motherfucker.

One of my favorite memories of elementary school was playing the 1.2 version of this for windows during computer class. Was actually pretty fun, with the hunting being the best part. Didn't matter that we couldn't put any more weight on the wagon, all of the wildlife had to go! Also the only game to make a meme about dysentery.

That game that everyone played on the Mac's back in elementary.

This game is the very definition of childhood. You do not walk into an elementary school and pretend you haven't played The Oregon Trail - it just isn't done, you played it and loved it. It's one of those games that anyone would play at any time and still get some enjoyment out of it. Dysentery isn't something that gets old once you die of it once!
