Latest Microreviews on Silent Hill 4: The Room

Silent Hill 4: The Room Review written Monday, April 22nd, 2013 at 11:36 am.

Konami probably realised that the whole "lonely person in a foggy town"-scenario was getting old hat, so they tried something new and fairly unexpected, the result being a surrealistic story that feels like Oldboy meets Clive Barker meets HP Lovecraft. This works rather well, at least up to the point halfway through where you're suddenly required to revisit all the places you've been to before, making gameplay incredibly repetitive and forced in the process. But all that aside, The Room has some genuinely scary and surreal moments which make it possibly the most underrated game in the series. It is certainly much better than what came after.

Not the worst SH but pretty bad. No 3D controls, no real otherworlds, hardly any good level design, only one boss fight. Okay but not great scenes, a lot of the story is told through memos, but it gets interesting towards the end. Meele combat is kinda fun. Ghosts don't add much to the game. Graphics aren't great like the first three games and music is sparse. Henry's a bad main character. Limited items is actually kinda cool.

From all the video games that I've played, Silent Hill 4 is the one that forced me to persuade ONLY to see the story till the very end, I've never been so interested in a game before only because of it's story telling; I don't want to spoil anything but I can say that it's not just the best story in the Silent Hill series, but to me, one of the best ever told in a video game; it's deep, thrilling, philosophical and catchy, it's like watching a good horror movie. What damages this game so much to me is the controls, SH4 has the worst combat system in the series; it's not has scary has it's predecessor and some sound effects are just comedically funny.

A departure from old Silent Hill games. Still very creepy.

Team Silent's red headed stepchild is still measurably better than most survival-horror games. Ditching the familiar gameplay of the first three Silent Hills for a more "experimental" approach proved to be a mixed bag, but when the game is at its best, it contains some of the most frighteningly bizarre imagery of the series and one of the most engrossing plots.

The first survival horror game I ever played. I closed my eyes when I was little. Now I watch intently.

Very underrated. A very surreal, dreamlike atmosphere, amazing story and music.
