Sid Meier's Civilization

  • Sid Meier's CivilizationBuy on Amazon - Copy URL
  • Developed by MicroProse (1991) on PlayStation, Super NES, PC, Mac, Amiga, Atari ST
  • Strategy > Turn-Based
  • Civilization is a turn-based single-player computer game. The player takes on the role of the ruler of a civilization starting with only one or two Settler units. The player attempts to build an empire in competition with between two and six other civilizations. The game requires a fair amount of micromanagement (although less than any of the simulation games). The scope of the game is huge — larger than most other computer games. The game begins in 4000 BC, before the Bronze Age, and can last through to 2100 AD (on the easiest setting) with Space Age and "future technologies".

This is the game that got me into gaming. I have probably played Civ I, III, and V for maybe somewhere between 500 and 1000 hours!

Everything from starting positions to when other civs build wonders to the combat is decided randomly, which can really undermine the strategy aspect of the game. On top of that, there are some really bad design and balancing problems in the game: for instance, the bank and marketplace buildings both give you more money depending on how much a city already makes, and they also cost money to maintain, so sometimes they'll actually lose you money. Another really bad one is that ancient ruins, which are generally beneficial (which makes it logically a good idea to go for them) sometimes spawn barbarians. On the whole this first installment was pretty ineptly made.

Sid Meier's timeless masterpiece is an undeniable, important and influential part in gaming history! The graphics we're 1990 standard for computer games, there was only a few tunes in it and the story is you creating your own civilization. But what makes this game shine is the gameplay. With all it's detail and revolutionary concepts that redefined the entire genre forever, it's also probably the most addicting game i've ever played. The goal is to succeed in making your civilization stand the test of time, while creating your cities, forming your army and fighting enemy civilizations for power and survival. And all that could not be more fun than Sid Meier's masterwork. In terms of strategy-tactical games, it is the pinnacle!

Hard to choose one from the series (they're all great), but this game changed gaming for me forever.

A classic indeed. Although surpassed and improved upon by its successors, it is still the original, it is still the game where it all started.

First game I ever played, so it holds sentimental value. Still playable. But at his time, perfection.
