  • id Software's followup to Doom and Doom II, Quake is a first-person shooter. Its main technological innovation is the use of a true 3D engine - the levels themselves as well as the enemies are polygonal. This not only allows for more natural level designs and character animations, but also for more realistic lighting and the inclusion of simulated physics that have an effect on gameplay: grenades can bounce off walls and around corners, for example. In single-player mode, gameplay consists mainly of proceeding through the levels in search of an exit, killing everything that moves. Interaction with the game world is reduced to a minimum: since there is no use key, buttons are pressed by running into or shooting at them. As in id's earlier games, many secrets are waiting to be discovered, including a few hidden levels.

Otra aventura nostalgica

Quake was the next gen step from Doom II and I was hooked from the first instant I laid eyes on the game-play. This game also helped to usher in true 3D environments, which sparked the video card rendering revolution in gaming. 3dfx Monster daughter cards became the holy grail of gaming visual greatness. Once again multi-player was the heart of this game, plus the huge leap in rendering fidelity coupled with the intensified gore made it a legendary achievement in gaming.

Quake is just the perfect FPS. Yes, PERFECT. Weapons are amazing, levels are complex, enemies are frightening, the joy for killing and the music... oh, the music! a geniality from the master Treznor. Everything in this game is wonderfully horrible, I love it. Without doubt, if videogames are considered art, Quake must be one of the greatest exponents: more than a game, it's an experience.

I fell in love with the grenade launcher in that game. Also, it was the first time I saw proper 3D model enemies in a 3D environment instead of sprites. Together with the great lighting that made one awesome experience.

Quake is the early 3D equivalent to Doom. It's not quite as tightly balanced as the Doom games are, but it's much better than most in the genre. It also has a unique cosmic horror design and atmosphere that feels quite different from what most FPS games offer despite it being derided for how brown it is. Like Doom, the modding community is what really brings it together, and there are countless excellent mods available for it.
