Metroid single handedly popularized the 2D exploration genre, and in my opinion, it still holds up today. A lot of people say that the original Legend of Zelda aged better, but I disagree. That's because while they're both ridiculously convoluted, Metroid doesn't punish you as much for not knowing where exactly to go. Some people that the confusing nature of Zelda only amplifies the feeling of adventure, but it doesn't. At least Metroid gives you unlimited bombs. How are you supposed to know which areas to bomb in the first Zelda when you could waste precious items in doing so? That's why I prefer Metroid - it encourages exploration more by giving players the tools for the job at the beginning, making it fun the whole way through.

Set a number of benchmarks for 2D platformers and side-scrollers, remains playable even today and holds up better than most NES titles.

What can I say about Metroid? This game talks by itself. It's incredible the sense of immersion here, you are some type of humanoid (or android) on some type of planet, is hard to understand the history at the beggining. Suddenly you are battling for your life, searching for the Metroid and discovers that you are actually a woman, an mercenary woman, in a epic history with graphics and sounds perfects for that time. The game is a bit confusing, but it doesn't kills the gameplay.

Pretty tough to play nowadays but established much of the Metroid experience the series is now known for.
