  • Tokyo-to, a city not unlike Tokyo, somewhere in Asia, in the near future. This is the story about the GG's, one of three rival teenage gangs who ride motorised inline skates and are tagging the streets with graffiti. There is a turf war going on between the gangs GG's, the Poison Jam, and the high-tech freaks, the Noise Tanks. The evil Rokkaku Corporation has the corrupt police in their grasp, and, headed by Captain Onishima, the cops are hell-bent on subduing the unruly teen protagonists. But there is light in the darkness: the underground DJ, "Professor K," and his Jet Set Radio station keep tabs on what is happening on the streets of Tokyo-to, and soon our teens will have something much darker than the police to worry about.

Despite what you've played and what you've heard, Jet Grind Radio is only tangentially about skating and graffiti.

One of the most addictive games around, i loved everything about it from the graphics to the music. It's a shame the Dreamcast didn't last long on the scene as it did bring out a number of top games and this is one of them for sure.

To promote Jet Grind Radio, Sega held a graffiti contest in San Francisco. The mayor was pissed. He figured that teens playing the game might later go rollerblading with a backpack full of Krylon. In my case, he figured right! But let's not credit him too much -- not only was I a feckless idiot, I was a FANATIC. I played the game like mad. I sang "Rock It On" to friends. I bought a JGR slot machine from a Japanese pachinko parlor and woke the neighbors with it nightly. And all this was justified: JGR defined the Dreamcast generation -- MY generation -- with its arcade-like action, its fearless creativity, and its influential art styling (which I still count as the best in gaming history). And unlike Krylon, this game never dries.

Super stylish, a game unlike any other. Even it's sequel can't match the look of the original; the color palette is so vivid it's easy to overlook the blocky-ness of the random bystanders. Superb soundtrack too. Short enough to beat in a couple hours once you know what to do, but very replayable.

Even some games will stick in your mind whether or not if it is deep or not. That would be Jet Set Radio with one of the best soundtracks in gaming and a fun and comedic story of laying graffiti down to defeat the Man. True it is a simple setup and story but with some naturally insane Japanese humor (sending the army, tanks, and helicopters) just to stop some delinquent graffiti artist from tagging the city. With characters that may not leave your mind for better or worse(Professor K for example) but if you just want a fun game with humor, great soundtrack, great game play, and just want to teach the "man" a lesson you can't go wrong with Jet Set Radio.

The irreplaceable first moment I realized that games were art. The music, visual style and gameplay all come together perfectly in this delicious enchilada of awesome. An amazingly creative, subversive, offbeat experience that can be found nowhere else... except maybe the sequel.

I fell in love with Jet Set Radio / Jet Grind Radio the very moment I poped the disc into my Dreamcast. The cell-shaded graphics were nothing like I had seen before, and the rich Japanese urban environments were entirely new territory for me to explore. This game's soundtrack was also my first glimpse into some great artists like Guitar Vader and Jurassic 5.

One of the most unique platformers I've ever encountered.

Jet Set Radio (aka Jet Grind Radio) Review written Tuesday, February 1st, 2011 at 07:16 pm.

This is one of the best platformers, unique, because usually platformers are get from this end to that end, but not JSR, you go around spraying graffiti and avoiding all law-enforcement you can, it's a pretty good game. On the downside, it's a little too easy, for example, the bosses just run in a sricpted path, so they don't attack you at all. But the music is good and there are plenty of characters, and there's extra levels (or whatever) and secret to be found, so this game gets 9/10.
