  • Half-Life 2: Episode One is an expansion that continues the story from where it was left at the end of Half Life 2. You can encounter many of the characters from the previous game--they return with new abilities and storylines. This expansion focuses on the development of characters other than Gordon Freeman. The engine has also been improved, providing dynamic lighting effects that better model how the human eye reacts to different light sources. Gameplay additions will extend to multiplayer mode as well.

Just like the first one

Is it more of the same? Yes. But graphics improved, character interaction (with Alyx, basically) went to the highest levels in the HL series so far. Some parts of this new campaign are rather more memorable than the actual HL2's, so it's a great experience. It's short though, but with Alyx blasting one of the most amazing so-bad-it's-good jokes in the game, I can hardly complain.

After the stunning Half Life 2, this was a real disappointment. It's essentially more of the same, but done in quite bland environments with pretty boring puzzles and combat sequences. The story wasn't pushed forward much, and after an initially good start it just becomes pretty mediocre. Poor from Valve, however Episode 2 is MUCH better. Do play if you're a fan of the series, just be prepared for more of the same after Half Life 2.

While not as great as Episode 2, I find Episode 1 a slight improvement on HL2 itself. Alyx works extremely well as a side-kick, and the new enemies help diversify the roster a little. In general it feels slightly closer to the first game for me; despite the ally following you the storytelling sequences are more subtle than HL2, and there's slightly more emphasis on puzzle aspects. There's also a part with an elevator that provided possibly the tensest moment I've ever seen in a game.
