A tribe called The Ancients is stranded on a dull and empty island, so they summon The Breath to aid them on their journey to a better land. In the puzzle god game "From Dust" you literally mold the world to your liking by re-arranging earth, lava and water - a handful at a time. With soft earth you help the people get across the map, detour riverstreams and grow plants; lava, once cooled, crafts unpenetrable rock but it sets the vegetation on fire; and water stops any fire but can drown your people. You find yourself constantly playing with danger in order to progress. Add natural disasters, temporary powers, environment-affecting trees, and compelling gameplay is yours - as well as amazing imagery. The music can get repetitive, though.

I quite enjoyed From Dust, and thus far it is my early favorite for PSN/XBLA downloadable game of the year. The gameplay is simplistic and addictive, with each new level granting access to new powers and abilities, which are met in turn with new problems and puzzles. It keeps the game fresh and enjoyable all the way until the end. The water and lava physics are impressive, and the graphics are on-par with other downloadable titles. The controls take a bit of getting used to, but the game is easily manageable with a controller after a couple hours. A series of unlockable challenges add some replayability, however I keep coming back for the open-ended sandbox nature of the story levels after completion.

It's a real shame when a good game immediately gets the fun sucked out of it by the publishers. One could say Ubisoft is the chastity belt and U-play is the lock. And by the time you've finally made the game playable, it's tempting to just say "Fuck it!". But I got it started, and I'm met by a menu that reminds me of Spore. It starts off with a nice intro scene (though it drags on), where we see the birth of The Breath, which is the thing you control to make the tribe survive. Sound design is nice. The controls are pretty good and easy to learn. You move breath with both mouse and WASD, and it's best to use both equally (tip!). Can't wait to see how this game turns out! Looks like it will be a truly special God-simulator.
