Castlevania: Rondo of Blood

  • Castlevania: Rondo of BloodBuy on Amazon - Copy URL
  • Developed by Konami (1993) on PC Engine CD
  • Action > 2D Platformer
  • The plot is a short one: Richter Belmont's fiancee (along with other women) was kidnapped by Dracula and so he goes on a journey to rescue her and destroy Dracula. The game tells its story only in cutscenes. The game itself consist of Belmont trying to reach the end of each floor, defeating evil creatures on the way with your whip and sub-weapons. In comparison with the previous entry in the series, Super Castlevania IV, it lacks the eight-directional whipping. As with most Castlevania games the levels consist of platforming challenges which require good timing and reactions. At the end of each stage he will face a powerful boss.

Latest Microreviews on Castlevania: Rondo of Blood

Castlevania: Rondo of Blood Review written Tuesday, January 13th, 2015 at 01:42 am.

9.5Classic!

750 is not enough. Why America got the butchered Snes Dracula X is almost unforgivable. We had to wait for the Wii to get the real deal. Not everyone had the luxury of being able to import it. Also it actually grieves me NOT to include it on my top 25. I didn't want to be too heavy handed & unfair though. To me it has the single "Darkest" feel of any Castlevania game period! The Soundtrack is easily the third best. Truth to tell it has a couple of tunes that are even superior to "Any" on SOTN yet the soundtrack is not the overall package SOTN is. I wish Konami would do a idealised "Perfecto" English version for the "Big Screen" not the Dracula X Chronicles version. Only in a perfect world which this is anything but! THE ORIGINAL!

10Classic!

This is perfection of 2D action platformers made manifest. Not only does it gather the best aspects of every Castlevania before it and improves upon them, it represents everything a 2D platformer should strive for. This game is about balance, not too slow and laborious nor too fast and shallow, it's design is both entertaining and deep, every boss and every stage leaves it's mark and the absolutely spot on controls only amplify your enjoyment greatly. The best thing that can be said about this game is that it's a labour of love, everything from the challenging and clever level design to the optional paths and large number of secrets just go to show how Konami went all the stops with this game. A true classic that shows dedication.

10Classic!

The perfect balance. Blithe, almost Megaman-ish, and nearly almost cheery at points, but without forsaking atmosphere and all those weird little quirks the franchise used to have. How do the Japanese reconcile a game about gothic European horror with, well, the fact they're Japanese? It's an interesting negotiation, or it was anyway, before they decided "who gives a shit". It feels faster than the other linear Castlevanias, but it's still got that tactical plod to it. Also, there's just something about 90s video game music.

By far the best Classicvania

Castlevania: Rondo of Blood Review written Tuesday, May 29th, 2012 at 01:39 am.

9.5Classic!

One of the masterpieces of the Castlevania series that gained notoriety due to its reputation as the great game that never initially got a release outside japan. Rondo of Blood is a game that lives up to the hype, hitting a sweet spot between the linear design of traditional Castlevania titles with small portion of exploration in branching paths with secrets to uncover, which would later lead to the Metroidvania design of later releases. I like the traditional approach myself, and in my opinion, as good as games like Castlevania III and IV are, this is the peak of traditional Castlevania platforming.

7.5Great

A really good game, but Super Castlevania IV is better.

9.0Fantastic

This is probably one of the best Castlevania games ever made. When I saw it was on the virutal console I knew I had to buy it because of how famous it is and how it never came out in the US. This game got me into the Castlevania (not that I haven't tried) And is truly a masterpiece in almost every single aspect of its gameplay. I love this game so much I want to get a Japanese PC engine and import this game just to play it. Though I must say this game is incredibly hard and I wish the cut-scenes were translated but the overall presentation is amazing.

10Classic!

This game combined the best of the old and the new Castlevania games. Although the controls are limited, the gothic graphics are a marvelous piece of art. The bosses are challenging but cryptically intricate. Even the voice samples are still revolutionary by today's standards.
